following behind

This summer I’ve spent a lot of time following Luke. At 14 months, his curiosity is keeping us both busy. He’s still too small to roam alone for long. He climbs the ladder to Garrett’s bunk bed. He crawls from Gracie’s reading chair to her bed and then falls on the floor, which usually results in tears.

I remember following Gracie and Garrett. It was wearing. It got old. I remember thinking I was wasting my time. At the end of the day, it was hard to say I had accomplished much because I had given most of my energy to following behind two rambunctious toddlers.

But it didn’t last long.

So I walk behind Luke, I watch him pull out toys and we put them back. I keep an eye on him as he struggles to get on the couch. Sometimes he achieves it, but most of the time his well intended endeavor ends with a whimper.

It’s still wearing. And it still gets old some days.

But I know it won’t last long enough.
